Hiking, lying under a tree and having picnics…

Yesterday we went to Brownsea Island. When we got there Sean and I said “BYE, BOYS!!” and off they went with two backpacks full of picnic. Brownsea Island is an ISLAND, yo, so we figured they couldn’t get very lost.

As soon as they were out of sight, we ducked into the cafe, and had a very nice child-free lunch! And then we hiked into the woods, lay under a tree and watched little birds eating fruit and bugs in blissful peace and quiet.

Let’s just think about that quiet for a moment… siiigh …

When we had had enough of lying on the rather pointy forest floor, we kept hiking (in relative peace and quiet) and saw a few more birds, but no red squirrels and no deer. Brownsea Island was crawling with holidaying humans, so the animals must have been hiding! It’s very dry these days, our beautiful summer weather has made grass brown and moss cracked. Today looks like it will be another scorcher!

Later in the afternoon, we located the boys (or they located us) and we lay under a tree again while they climbed in the tree and showed off. We ate oranges and cheese and “Margo Buns” which Margo makes for us every week, but we did not eat chocolate or drink coffee because our dear children had eaten/drunk it all.

But it was worth it. I’d lose a little chocolate, to lie under a tree again!

Now, I’d better go and make a heap of pancakes to feed these little darlings, who are crashing around very loudly. Good thing the neighbours are away, poor long-suffering people!

Photos to come when I unpack the bags and find the camera…

That sounds LOVELY! What a wonderful way to spend the day… If I were you I’d be heading back to that place again and again!

Krissa, we’ve been FOUR TIMES! It’s been great to see the different seasons there. The daffodils in spring were so beautiful, and the deer peeping out from the forest, and coming out slowly… but don’t get too close or they melt back into the undergrowth!

You did it wrong. When you send the kids out with a backpack on an island, they can find you.

You need to pick a much bigger place next time.

    • Nan says:

Like South Dorset? We were actually hoping for some chocolate… which the nerds had eaten anyway. I say we lose them in the New Forest next time!
